About Carmel Mission in Carmel-By-The-Sea, California

Built in 1771, the second of the 21 California missions was Father Serra’s headquarters. It is officially called Basilica of Mission San Carlos Borromeo del Rio Carmel and is one of two basilicas on the West Coast. It is honored because of historic importance and the work of Father Serra.

The Carmel Mission is located on Rio Road off Highway 1. Tour groups make regular stops at the mission and grounds known for its scenic beauty and colorful photo opportunities. If you are staying in the area hit the many excellent Carmel beaches and stop by the Carmel Mission too.
