About Fort Mason in San Francisco, California

Fort Mason has a large open grass lawn hidden away from busy areas nearby buzzing with tourists. Not that this park can’t be packed on sunny days, but it will be mostly locals. There are a few centrally located palm trees for shade, but the park is mostly open space. It’s a great spot for a picnic after visiting Ghirardelli Square or the beach at Aquatic Park. Paved paths wind all around the sloped park which has old red-roofed military buildings at the back of it – many historic buildings from the Civil War and WWII eras were removed to create the valuable open space. Fort Mason is a perfect place to walk around without bumping into other people in this otherwise jam-packed city. Fort Mason is part of Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
