About Old Mission Santa Ines in Solvang, California

Mission Santa Ines was founded on September 17, 1804 by Father Estevan Tapis. It was named in honor of Saint Agnes, an early Christian martyr of the fourth century. The Spanish word for Agnes is Inés. The nearby town of Santa Ynez got its name from this same heritage.

The 19th in a chain of 21 California missions, Old Mission Santa Ines is the favorite of many who enjoy the vistas of this missions hilltop grounds. Views overlook the Santa Ynez River Valley and extend out to the Santa Ynez and San Rafael mountain ranges.

Located between Mission Santa Barbara and Lompoc’s Mission La Purisima Concepcion, the mission once included vast acreage with thousands of livestock and crops. Devastated by the great earthquake of 1812, the mission was rebuilt and is still a beautiful sight inside and out.

The mission is an active church, but offers guided and self-guided tours of the mission buildings and gardens daily from 9 am to 4:30 pm. It has a museum and a gift shop too. A small admission fee is charged to adults.
