About Abalone Point in Whitethorn, California

Abalone Point is a broad flat grass and wildflower covered bluff on the west side of the small town of Shelter Cove. Unfortunately, there isn’t a beach here. But this spot has big rocks where seals and sea lions sometimes hangout making it a fun spot to stop and take pictures. Abalone Point is exposed to the windy damp weather of this rugged part of the Humboldt County Coast. The waves crash violently on the rocks of the point and the spray carries onshore in the wind so dress accordingly. In the summer this place is a scenic picnic spot. There is a parking lot for Abalone Point off Lower Pacific Drive near the Shelter Cove Airport. Little Black Sands Beach is just a short drive north if you want to walk on a dark pebbly beach.
