Carbon Beach – West Access

The newest beach access in LA County is the “Ackerberg Access” to Carbon Beach. You can find it at the address 22466 Pacific Coast Hwy in Malibu. After years of litigation, it finally opened in late June 2015. Officially it has been named the Carbon Beach West Access, which is a little confusing since there is another Carbon Beach access point west of here (see below).

Considering how hard the Ackerberg’s fought this public access it should bear their name. Thanks to the tenacity of the California Coastal Commission we all have an easy way to visit the middle portion of this stunning beach which is about 1.5 miles long. Due to the many wealthy home owners along this Malibu shoreline Carbon Beach is commonly referred to as Billionaires’ Beach. Actually, looking at the stunning homes is one of the main reasons to visit Carbon Beach.

The westernmost access is called Zonker Harris for the Doonesbury Comic Strip character created by Garry Trudeau (it was named in his honor since he is a public beach access advocate).

The eastern access is called the David Geffen Access since he, like the Ackerberg’s, fought for years to stop an access near his mansion on Carbon Beach.

At high tide most of Carbon Beach is narrow, but at other times it’s a sunny south-facing beach that is perfect for sunbathing or walks on the sand.
