Reef Point Beach at Crystal Cove State Park

Reef Point in Crystal Cove State Park has a large day-use parking area at Reef Point Drive and Pacific Coast Highway. This 1791-acre state park offers 3.5 miles of beaches between Laguna Beach and Newport Beach so it’s an ideal place for walking on the beach. Reef Point has tidepools that provide a fun place to stop on your walk if the tide is low.

Several hiking paths drop down to the beaches from the Reef Point parking area on the bluff. The Bluff Top Trail is an accessible trail that is open to bikes and goes all the way to the north end of the park at Treasure Cove. Several side trails branch off and go out to vista points.

In addition to hiking and mountain biking, swimming, surfing, and scuba diving are popular activities at Reef Point. Muddy Creek empties out onto the beach from Muddy Canyon at the south side of Reef Point especially after rains.

The park has farther-afield hiking, backpacking, and camping opportunities from the El Moro Visitor Center south of the Reef Point Entrance. Just north is the Crystal Cove Historical District at the Los Trancos Entrance.

The land in this state park was part of a massive ranch called the Irvine Ranch and was sold to the state in 1979. In that same year, the Historic District’s cottages and the park became a nationally registered historic place. A plaque honoring this registration is located on the bluff near a viewpoint on Reef Point.
