About Ed’s Surfing Beach in Goleta, California

Ed’s is the name of a beach and surfing area on a point below the El Capitan Ranch west of Santa Barbara. It used to be accessible through the private ranch, but the owners are now enforcing the no trespassing rules to avoid littering and other problems along the access route. Now that hiking in is no longer possible, the best way to get here is by walking east on the beach from El Capitan State Beach – a walk of over two miles each way. There is a day-use parking area and a campground at this state park so you can try to get here in a day trip or make it easier by camping. Either way you should consult tide reports before heading out. Ed’s Beach is only accessible via the beach at low tides. When you get here you’ll discover that it is a similar round boulder field to the point at El Capitan State Beach. Local surfers and hard core beach explorers are the only folks that will probably make this trek. If you are not a local, it’s not worth coming here for the surfing as the Ed’s regulars are known to be unfriendly and the waves are reportedly mediocre at best.
