Soberanes Point Beach at Garrapata State Park

Soberanes Point is near the middle of the four miles of oceanfront property in Garrapata State Park south of Carmel. Other than sandy Garrapata Beach at the south end of the state park, the shoreline here is very rocky and inaccessible.

Near Soberanes Point there are several small sandy beaches below cliffs. Hiking trails meander in all directions with views into these pocket coves, but most are too steep to enter. The north access is at is Soberanes Creek Beach. There you will find a cascading waterfall and stunning views down the coast.

The access for Soberanes Point is across from the Rocky Ridge Trail on Highway 1. This trailhead has two excellent hiking options including a ridge trail with views and a valley trail along Soberanes Creek. A toilet is sometimes provided at the trailhead. If not, just south of here is an old barn at another trailhead where toilets can be found.

The only real accessible beach at Soberanes is in the cove south of the point. A brown Coastal Access sign for Soberanes Point marks the spot, but the trail to the beach begins north of the parking area. All around the point the shoreline is dotted with large rocks covered with birds. Visible farther offshore is Lobos Rock.

Several shoulder parking areas are provided along Highway 1 in Garrapata State Beach. Look for the gates numbered 7 through 11 for access to to the Soberanes Point area beaches.

Garrapata means tick in Spanish so beware that this area has ticks and they can carry Lyme Disease. Always check yourself if you come in contact with vegetation when hiking or exploring near the shore.
