About Little Black Sands Beach in Whitethorn, California

Little Black Sands Beach is located at the north end of the small resort town of Shelter Cove. It’s almost a miniature version of it’s 20-mile long big brother to the north (Black Sands Beach) but it does have a slightly different character. The beach is made up of two coves covered in dark pebbly volcanic sand and is shielded by huge rocks at the beginning, middle, and end. If you keep walking past the north end you’ll be on Big Black Sands Beach. Access to Little Black Sands Beach is from a parking lot at the south end of the beach where Dolphin Drive dead ends. To get here from Shelter Cove Road, follow Upper Pacific Drive to Lower Pacific Drive to Dolphin Drive. Getting to Shelter Cove is requires a long twisty drive from Highway 101 at Garberville.
