About North Star Beach in Newport Beach, California

North Star Beach is one of the best access points for Newport Beach’s Back Bay. This small sandy beach is adjacent to the Newport Aquatic Center. NAC rents kayaks (singles and doubles) and stand-up paddleboards (SUPs) on a first-come first-served basis for exploring the calm waters of Back Bay, Upper Newport Bay Ecological Preserve, and Newport Harbor. These rentals are super convenient, but anyone can launch their own watercrafts at this hand-carried boat launch. Be sure to check tide charts before heading out on the water to avoid fighting the current or getting stuck somewhere as the tide recedes. The Newport Bay Conservancy offers guided tours of the ecological preserve in the mornings on weekend days and they begin at North Star Beach. This protected area has many species of birds and has become one of the top birding destinations in California. Those who don’t want to paddle their way into Upper Bay can walk the shoreline in Upper Newport Bay Nature Preserve.
