About Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area (SVRA) in Oceano, California

Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area is the only California State Park that allows non-street-legal vehicles to drive on the beach (see all the beaches that can you can drive on).

To enter this five mile long wide sandy beach, just drive west on Pier Avenue in Oceano to an entrance station and parking lot. You can drive cars on the beach if desired, but four-wheel drive vehicles with larger tires are recommended to avoid getting stuck in the sand.

Non street-legal off-road vehicles must be delivered (i.e. on a trailer) to the off-highway vehicle (OHV) area which starts one mile south of Pier Avenue. In that area ATV’s, motorcycles, and dune buggies roam freely around the sand dunes. The areas that are off-limits (to protect natural habitats) are fenced off to prevent vehicle entry. Beach camping is allowed in the OHV area.

Note that when Arroyo Grande Creek is flowing across the beach and gets to a depth of 12″ it will be temporarily closed and illegal to cross it. Check tide tables for California and avoid high tide to have a better chance to cross the creek and get to the OHV area. Vehicle use is allowed from 7am to an hour after sunset each day.

North of Pier Avenue you’ll find Pismo State Beach and the Oceano Campground for normal tent and RV camping. Nearby there’s a rare monarch butterfly grove on Meadow Creek next to North Beach Campground in Pismo Beach.

I think it would be a huge mistake to close down the (ohv)& riding in the duyour economy is mostly from those who come to oceano, to camp, ride in the dunes. That is mainly the sole purpose for even coming to oceano. Your only hurting yourselves, if you close down the dunes from ohv riding. I personally don’t plan to ever visit oceano beach again, after the dunes camping and riding are shut down. What’s the point? We are going one last time for a week, while it’s still OK to ride and drive on the beach. I’m not the only one who feels this way.

Just wait! Noone even wants to come to oceano, ca. Anymore if they can’t ride, camp, or drive on the beach. It’s going to drive alot of businesses out. Some people depend on this beach for their living. Well see how much revenue is lost.
