About Port Hueneme Beach Park in Port Hueneme, California
Port Hueneme Beach Park is the main beach in the city of Port Hueneme in Ventura County. This non-touristy town, which is completely surrounded by the larger city of Oxnard, has a wonderful sandy beach that comes with a wooden pier and lighthouse. If you are looking for a beach that doesn’t make “best of” blog lists, but is clearly underrated, this is a place you should discover.
The beach here is wide with room for many more visitors than it typically receives. The Port Hueneme Fishing Pier, located near the center of the beach, is about a quarter-mile long and worth a walk even if not fishing. Another walking opportunity is the paved promenade trail that connects the pier to the Port Hueneme Lighthouse at the north end next to the port entrance (about one mile each way from the pier). An even longer walk of up to 2.5 miles is on the beach heading south to some birding wetlands and Ormond Beach (might have to wade across one creek if it has been raining).
The park has grassy areas, beach volleyball nets, and picnic areas built right onto the sand. Surfside Seafood restaurant is near the pier entrance if you want to grab some grub for a picnic or sunset dinner. The restaurant hours change during the year (and with the weather) so consult their website or call them, but it’s usually open for lunch and dinner daily. We can recommend the grilled fish tacos and the clam chowder. On Wed evenings they have all-you-can-eat fish and chips plus live music!
The sand on the beach at Port Hueneme comes from a bi-annual dredging operation by the US Army Corps of Engineers. Without that imported sand, the beach erodes away making the park, the pier, and even nearby roads vulnerable to damage from the surf.
Getting to Port Hueneme Beach Park is fairly simple. Ventura Road will take you straight there from where Highway 101 and Highway 1 meet in Oxnard. There is a large parking lot at the intersection of Ventura Road and Surfside Drive and another one just south (fees required for parking in either lot).
Note that before you visit this town you should know that Hueneme is pronounced “why-na-me”.
