Secret Beach of Point Reyes

Secret Beach in Point Reyes National Seashore is a hidden beach that is reached by walking south on the shore from Sculptured Beach. It is only accessible at very low tides (“minus” or negative tides) so consult tide tables before going. After walking south from Sculptured Beach you will reach a rock arch “doorway” that takes you to this long stretch of secluded beach.

The real highlight of Secret Beach is the “Secret Cave” which leads to a hidden amphitheater known as the Point Reyes Crater. After reaching Secret Beach you have to walk south for about a quarter-mile then go around a tall rocky point (at low tide). Once you are around the point look to the left for a cave which, depending on the sand level, will be a walk or a crawl to enter. The round steep-walled amphitheater is really something to behold.

Farther down the beach there is a small waterfall and at the south end of the beach there are rock arches at Point Resistance. Bring a camera to document all the natural features of Secret Beach. Remember to be careful and not get trapped by rising tides.

Note that Secret Beach and Sculptured Beach don’t have parking lots. It’s a three mile beach walk from the parking lot for Limantour Beach to reach Secret Beach and it all has to be timed with the minus tide. Not an easy feat.
