About Stone Steps Beach in Encinitas, California
Stonesteps Beach is a neighborhood beach access in Encinitas that is a little off-the-beaten-track and not meant for the masses. It’s a narrow beach that is excellent for surfing and beach walking. Limited street parking is the main thing that keeps this a quiet spot.
The beach gets its “stone steps” name from a large stone and concrete stairway that descends the steep crumbly bluff to the narrow beach below. Halfway down there’s a colorful ceramic tile mosaic that is also represented on the beach access sign.
From the bottom of the stairs, it is possible to walk in either direction for miles, but be aware that high tides can cover the entire beach in this area. Walk north for 4/5 mile and you’ll get to Beacon’s Beach and walk south for a half-mile and you’ll reach family-friendly Moonlight Beach.
To get to Stonesteps Beach, head west on El Portal Street from Highway 101, then veer left onto S El Portal St to the end and look for the “Stonesteps Beach Access” sign. Park on a nearby street and head down the stairs to the beach.

Reviews
This is a gem of a beach but getting smaller by the storm. In January 2023 the city closed the access since the stone steps stairs are supposedly unsafe. The Army C of E is going to dredge sand and put it onto the beach between Swamis and Beacons. Hopefully this will protect the access after it is repaired. This project is called the USCOE Encinitas and Solana Beach Coastal Storm Damage Reduction Project and it might start in 2023. Here is info on the beach access closure.
