About Torrey Pines State Beach – North Beach in San Diego, California

North Beach at Torrey Pines State Beach is on the north side of the lagoon entrance at Los Penasquitos Marsh Natural Preserve. The lagoon and wetlands are excellent for bird-watching and there are vantage points from the parking lot.

Like Torrey Pines South Beach across the marsh entrance channel the North Beach has a large parking lot with easy access and nice facilities including restrooms, vending machines, and picnic tables.

When the water is deep enough you can swim in the saltwater at the creek channel, but it’s often hardly a trickle, just deep enough for wading and splashing around in. The bridge for N Torrey Pines Road provides shade for wading in the water of the creek. When conditions are safe you can play in the surf here too, but the waves can be sizeable and better suited for surfing which is popular here. There are lifeguards on staff in the summer months.

Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve is on the hill above the beach and has hiking trails to several vista points. The city of Del Mar is just north and La Jolla isn’t far away to the south with many more beaches to choose from.

Wondrous beach! Fun to walk under the bridge and wade in the shallows, lots of birds to see, has lifeguards if you have kids. Not a lot of dry sand during higher high tides.

Torrey Pines North State Beach access to the sand is an hazard and will one day have a serious law suit because people fall getting on and off the beach. I’ve fallen several times and today my husband fell and it wasn’t his first time either. I was told last year that something was going to be built this year but so far nothing. Please please do something before someone is seriously injured.
