Part of California’s famed “Lost Coast”, the town of Shelter Cove is a remote location, and mostly free of development. Just north of town, you’ll find the King Range National Conservation Area, with its secluded beaches accessible by walking the shoreline or the Lost Coast Trail. From the unusual black sand and offshore reefs of Shelter Cove Beach, to those of the appropriately named Black Sands Beach, this community shelters a diverse and natural environment. The relocated Cape Mendocino Lighthouse at Mal Coombs Park stands as a beacon to the region’s former maritime history. All of the beaches and businesses in Shelter Cove have a Whitethorn address but this town is only Shelter Cove to locals.
