About Lombard Street in San Francisco, California

Lombard Street is a famous street located in San Francisco, California. It is known for its steep, winding section that has eight sharp turns and is often called the “crookedest street in the world.”

The history of Lombard Street dates back to the mid-19th century, when the city was rapidly expanding and its hills posed a challenge for transportation. The steep grade of Lombard Street was too steep for horses and carriages, so in 1875, the city built a wooden plank road to help vehicles navigate the hill. However, the wooden road proved to be too slippery, and in 1922, the city replaced it with a brick-paved road that features the winding section of Lombard Street that we know today.

The significance of Lombard Street lies in its unique and picturesque design, which has made it one of San Francisco’s most popular tourist attractions. The crooked section of the street features beautiful landscaping, including flowers, trees, and shrubs, which provide a beautiful backdrop for photographs. The street’s unique design has also been featured in numerous films and television shows, adding to its cultural significance.

If you haven’t seen Lombard Street you’ll want to check it out and maybe even drive it (one way downhill).
