Upper Newport Bay Preserve is a protected natural area located in Orange County. It is one of the largest coastal wetlands in Southern California and is recognized as a significant ecological habitat for various plant and animal species.

Covering an area of approximately 750 acres (303 hectares), the preserve is situated at the upper end of the Newport Bay estuary, adjacent to the city of Newport Beach. It encompasses a diverse range of habitats, including salt marshes, mudflats, coastal dunes, and freshwater marshes, which support a wide array of wildlife.

The preserve is home to more than 200 species of birds, making it a popular destination for birdwatching enthusiasts. It serves as a critical stopover for migratory birds along the Pacific Flyway, with various species, including endangered and threatened ones, using the wetlands as a resting place or nesting site. Visitors can spot great blue herons, egrets, terns, ducks, and numerous other waterfowl.

Aside from its avian inhabitants, Upper Newport Bay Preserve also supports a diverse array of flora and fauna. The wetland ecosystem sustains a variety of plant species, including pickleweed, saltgrass, marsh grasses, and coastal sage scrub. The bay is home to a rich marine life, with fish, invertebrates, and other aquatic organisms populating its waters.

The preserve offers several recreational activities for visitors to enjoy and learn about the natural environment. There are hiking trails and nature walks, including the 10 mile Back Bay Loop Trail, that meander through the wetlands, allowing visitors to explore the diverse habitats and observe wildlife. Educational programs, guided tours, and interpretive displays provide insights into the ecological importance of the preserve and the various species that call it home.

In addition to its ecological significance, Upper Newport Bay Preserve plays a vital role in flood control and water quality improvement for the region. The wetlands act as a natural filtration system, helping to purify water and prevent pollutants from entering the bay.

Efforts are continually made to conserve and protect the Upper Newport Bay Preserve. Several organizations, including the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, work together to manage the area, preserve its natural resources, and maintain the delicate balance of its ecosystems.
