About Spooner’s Cove - Montana de Oro State Park in Los Osos, California

Spooner’s Cove Beach sits in a cove where Islay Creek empties into the Pacific Ocean in Montana de Oro State Park. This beautiful cove has a pebbly beach, tide pools, caves, and unique rock formations to climb around on especially at lower tides. This is also a great place to start a hike or mountain bike ride as there are many trails to choose from.

Islay Creek Campground, the only campground in Montana de Oro State Park, is across the street walking distance from the beach. Spooners Cove is the only area of Montana de Oro State Park where dogs are allowed on the beach, but they must be on a leash.

Trails branch out in all directions from this central hub of the park. One follows the bluff (Bluff Trail) and one leads up to the summit of Valencia Peak (1347 feet). Several of the trails and roads in the area are open to mountain bikes and horseback riders.

To get to this beach, leave the town of Los Osos on Pecho Valley Road and look for the entrance to the Spooner’s Cove day-use parking area on the right just before reaching the campground.
