Less than a mile in size, the tiny town of San Simeon is packed with plenty of options for tourists. Newspaper baron William R. Hearst was a big influence on the community. Memorial State Beach, with its lengthy pier, campground, beach and discovery center bears his name. So does the Hearst Castle, an impressive hilltop mansion that routinely draws in a large number of tourists each year. If you’re lucky, you might be able to snag a table at the famed Sebastian Store before heading to view young seals at the Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery.
