About Bair Island Wildlife Refuge Trails in Redwood City, California
Bair Island has been part of Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge since 1999, but it wasn’t until 2013 that hikers could cross a pedestrian bridge to access the inner part of the island. In 2016 all of the trails were finally open to the public. Now it is a great place to explore and photograph birds and other animals on the southwest shore of San Francisco Bay. The trails are open sunrise to sunset year-round. Dogs are not allowed as this is a natural birding and wildlife habitat. Bikes are allowed, but like all trail users, they must stay on designated paths. Kayaking is popular here with many waterways meandering around the islands. You can put in at Docktown Marina nearby.
