About Chumash Painted Cave State Historic Park in Santa Barbara, California
Chumash Painted Cave is not your typical state park. This small historical place is hidden up a windy road in the Santa Ynez Mountains above Santa Barbara. There is no visitor center or entrance fee. Instead they mark the site with a sign and provide space for about three cars next to the stairs that lead up to the cave. The state has put up a steel mesh protective barrier to allow visitors to see the colorful artwork but keep vandals and other idiots out. With a small camera or phone camera it is possible to reach inside the barrier to take photos of them. If you drive up this far, you should continue on up to the short hike that leads out to Knapp’s Castle.
