About Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve in San Francisco, California

Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve is a large wooded park near the center of San Francisco. It’s packed with trails, over 5 miles actually, and they are open to boots and bike tires. Because the park is so densely wooded, there are only peak-a-boo views through the trees. Even the summit of Mount Sutro has a small open meadow, but no views. This meadow used to be a Nike Missile control site code named SF-89C, but it has been removed and all remnants have been covered over.

Trailheads for these multi-use trails are all around the park. A map created by the “Sutro Stewards” is helpful for knowing where to park and where the trails go. The park is jointly managed by the University of California San Francisco which has a campus adjacent to Mount Sutro, and the city parks and rec department.
