Muir Beach Overlook in Muir Beach, California
Muir Beach Overlook is on a hidden prominence north of Muir Beach, California in Marin County. It’s an attraction that most travelers drive right by without noticing.
From the trailhead a short path of about 200 yards leads out to a viewpoint overlooking the Pacific Ocean about 400 feet below steep cliffs. Just before the end of the trail, an elevated rocky spot has views south toward the town’s main beach (Muir Beach) and the town itself. For this view you must go around the fence and be very careful on the rocks. Continue to the end of the trail for slightly different views that include the coast north of the overlook (toward Slide Ranch).
Near the parking area you’ll find four historic concrete military structures once used as lookouts to identify and communicate any incoming aircraft and ships to bases in nearby San Francisco.
You can find the overlook parking lot by driving Highway 1 north of Muir Beach and looking for a sign for “Muir Beach Overlook”. The parking lot has a restroom but no access to the shoreline below
