About Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center in Imperial Beach, California

Tijuana Estuary Visitor Center is the place to start for a visit to this vast natural setting. The Tijuana Estuary is a wetlands habitat at the mouth of Tijuana River between the city of Imperial Beach and the US border with Mexico. It is a birding mecca with many different vantage points for watching birds.

The visitor center has educational exhibits inside the building and natural flora with interpretive signs outside. Trails that venture into the park for better views of the scene start right from the visitor center (trails are open dawn til dusk). The helpful staff members have maps and can give advice on where to explore. Parking at the visitor center is free, but the building is only open Wednesday through Sunday.

Adjacent to the estuary are two beaches on opposite sides of the river mouth. Border Field State Beach is to the south (the park is frequently closed and you must drive around the estuary) and the beach at Tijuana Slough National Wildlife Refuge which is accessed from Imperial Beach not far from the visitor center.
