About Lanphere Dunes in Arcata, California

Lanphere Dunes on the Samoa Peninsula near Arcata is the northernmost dunes unit that is managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service in Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge. Unfortunately the dunes are only accessible by permit or with a guided service. The beach at Lanphere however is open during daylight hours for those who are walking north from Ma-le’i Dunes. The beach here runs continuously in both directions so once on the beach it is hard to tell where separate dunes unit boundaries are. There are two parking lots at Ma-le’l Dunes Cooperative Management Area. The southern lot is open every day, but the road to the northern lot is closed Tuesday through Thursday weekly. Call the wildlife refuge to inquire about guided tours if you wish to see Lanphere Dunes.
