About Mike Thompson Wildlife Area, South Spit Humboldt Bay in Loleta, California
Mike Thompson Wildlife Area, South Spit Humboldt Bay is the wordy official name for the long beach on the sandy spit south of the entrance to Humboldt Bay near Eureka. There are three parking areas and two vehicle access routes along South Spit Road for beachcombers to access this huge expanse of beach. Cars and horses are allowed on the beach, but not in the dunes. Driving on the beach is only allowed on the wave slope and four-wheel drive is strongly recommended. This beach is popular with birdwatchers, fishermen, and hunters during hunting season (October through January). Between March 1 and September 15 there are protected areas for snowy plover bird nesting habitats. During this period even the wave slope will be closed to vehicles. Camping is not allowed on in the Mike Thomson South Spit Wildlife Area. When you enter the gate note the time that is closes to avoid getting locked in. At the north end of the spit at the bay entrance is the South Jetty Picnic Area with standard day-use facilities.
