San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park

San Diego La Jolla Underwater Park is a marine sanctuary located in the La Jolla Cove area of San Diego, California. The park covers over 6,000 acres of ocean floor and is a popular destination for scuba divers and snorkelers alike. The park is home to a diverse range of marine life, including fish, sharks, sea turtles, and seals, and features a number of underwater canyons and caves for exploration.

Above water along the shore of the park are the 7 Caves of La Jolla. These sea caves can only be accessed by kayak, which is usually done from La Jolla Shores Beach. Only the Sunny Jim Cave can be entered by land and that is done through The Cave Store in La Jolla.

One of the most unique features of the park is the La Jolla Underwater Park Ecological Reserve, which is a much smaller “no take” area that protects and preserves the marine environment within the park. Another area within the park is the La Jolla Underwater Park Marine Life Refuge which is offshore from Scripps Pier Beach and is used by UC San Diego. The reserve is managed by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife and is home to over 700 species of plants and animals.

The park also offers a number of recreational activities, including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and surfing. Visitors can take guided tours of the park’s underwater areas or explore on their own. The park is open year-round and has a variety of facilities, including restrooms, showers, and picnic areas (at La Jolla Shores and La Jolla Cove).
