About Scripps Beach in La Jolla, California
Scripps Beach is adjacent to the UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanography campus in northern La Jolla. The long concrete Scripps Pier at the beach is not open to the public unfortunately, but the beach on both sides of it is.
Scripps Beach is much quieter than La Jolla Shores just to the south. If you want similar sand but with some peace and quiet, this is an alternative. Surfers come here often as they have a designated surfing area (north of the pier) which is separate from the swimming and kayaking area to the south.
To get to Scripps Beach drive north on La Jolla Shores Drive and turn left (west) onto El Paseo Grande then look for street parking (don’t park in campus lots). There is a stairway to the beach on the north side of the last house at the sharp bend in El Paseo Grande or you can walk through campus and go to the north side of the pier. Note that parking at La Jolla Shores is more abundant and it’s a pleasant walk up to the pier from there.
Caroline’s Café, which is above Scripps Beach south of the pier, has tasty food and excellent views. Walking north from the Scripps Pier leads into South Blacks Beach which is considered clothing-optional by some. This route can get cut off at high tide.
