About Potter Schoolhouse in Bodega, California

The Potter School building was made famous as a filming location in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 horror movie The Birds. In the movie the location was Bodega Bay, but the actual location is in the smaller town of Bodega a few miles inland from the coast. Building construction was completed in 1873 when it became a primary school for children in Bodega and the surrounding area. The upper portion was an open space used by the community for events and meetings.

Unfortunately Potter Schoolhouse is privately owned so it can’t be toured, but it is protected as a historic landmark and easily viewed from the street. It’s been owned the current family since the 1960’s and they are the ones who saved it from its dilapidated and condemned status. Visitors can take pictures from several angles and imagine the terrifying scene where screaming children ran from the schoolhouse down into the town while being attacked by angry crows (see our link to a YouTube video of the scene).
