About Pot Belly Beach in Aptos, California

Pot Belly Beach is a public beach in front of a private community and beach club in Aptos. The land on both sides of this community is owned by the state of California in the New Brighton State Beach (state park property).

The best way to access this beach is by entering at New Brighton State Beach and walking south on the sand, but you have to pay to park. Walking south, after you pass a long stretch of homes built right on the beach you’ll reach an undeveloped beach area that opens into a large park with hiking trails galore. This is the other side of the state park property and a great place to spread out and relax. Borregas Creek might be flowing through the beach at this location after rainfall.

It is possible to park for free on New Brighton Road near the railroad tracks outside of the Potbelly community entrance and walk trails to the beach. Just look for the gate with a brown state park sign showing rules icons and park hours. The trail to the beach begins at this gate. Dogs are allowed on leash on the trails and the beach if you go this route.  Note that access to Potbelly Beach Road is signed “private property” so don’t enter even if it is not gated.
