The port city of Avalon on Santa Catalina Island is a great place to go kayaking or stand-up paddleboarding. It has a safe protected harbor with interesting things to see including the Green Pleasure Pier, Lovers Cove, Catalina Casino, Descanso Beach and Hamilton Cove. Experienced kayakers can venture farther to the Catalina Island beach campgrounds. Wet Spot Rentals is a popular rental outfit in Avalon (open April thru September), but there are others. Consider getting snorkel gear too as the water is clear on Catalina and the snorkeling is excellent. Call ahead to reserve kayaks, SUPs, and other gear if you know what days you’ll be in Avalon.
