About Descanso Beach on Catalina Island in Avalon, California

Descanso Beach is walking-distance from the town of Avalon on Catalina Island. This private beach charges a small entrance fee and is located in front of a bar and restaurant. It’s one of the last places in Southern California where you can legally have a drink in your hand while on the beach. Since this is a private facility they don’t allow outside food and beverages to be brought in.

The beach itself is pebbly like other beaches in the area, but Descanso Beach Club has a sandy terrace behind the rocky shore for visitors to lay out on. Cabanas and chaise lounges are available for rent and can be reserved online. Other rentals are available here for kayaking, snorkeling, SUPing and more.

Getting to the beach requires a walk of over a half-mile from the Green Pleasure Pier at Crescent Beach in downtown Avalon. Just head north on the walkway along the waterfront and continue past the large white casino building. To get to Avalon, hop a Catalina Express Ferry from Los Angeles, Long Beach or Dana Point.
