About Catalina Island
Santa Catalina Island is just a short ferry ride away from ports in Long Beach, Dana Point, and the San Pedro District of Los Angeles. There are only two cities on the island, Avalon and Two Harbors. Most tourists opt for Avalon as it has more services and lodging options. There are beaches within walking distance of the Avalon ferry dock for swimming, snorkeling, and sunbathing. Two Harbors is a much smaller low-key town with quieter beaches and similar rental options as Avalon. Between these towns there are remote beaches that require either a bus shuttle, a long hike, or a boat ride. Several beaches are only accessible by a boat or sea kayak so plan ahead if you want to visit these hidden spots. Several of the Catalina beaches are owned or leased by private companies for yacht club members, summer camps, and other educational facilities. See our map to find the best public beaches on the island which excludes those private beaches. Hiking, biking, and camping on Catalina can make your stay more adventurous even if you don't plan to be out on the water.
