Steep Ravine Hot Springs

Steep Ravine Hot Springs is a beach hot spring that seeps up into the sand at Steep Ravine Beach in Marin County. Most of the time these seeps are under water and impossible to find, but in the right conditions you can find them.

Before heading to Steep Ravine Hot Springs consult a California tide chart to find a minus tide. These hot springs are rarely exposed and we have heard that they are not as reliable as they used to be. Lots of people in the Bay Area know about this beach spring so it can be crowded on the dates of minus tides. Even if you only get to soak your feet in hot sand it would be worth it!

The best parking area for the hot springs is along the shoulder of Shoreline Highway (Hwy 1) just north of the gated entrance to Steep Ravine (Rocky Point Rd, Stinson Beach, CA 94970). There is a rugged trail that descends from that parking area, but it’s pretty loose so we can’t recommend it. The safer way is to park there or as close to the gate as possible and walk down to Steep Ravine Beach and then follow the beach northward for about 250 yards (meters). This is only possible at super low tides. Note that rock climbers climb a huge rock near the hot springs called The Egg.
