About Baker Beach in San Francisco, California

Baker Beach is a large popular beach not far from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. There’s enough sand there for everyone to sunbathe if it’s warm enough. A huge military battery next to the parking lot is worth checking out if you visit Baker Beach.

On sunny weekends both of the parking lots at Baker Beach could be full and all the spaces along the entrance roads too. This is one of the most popular places in Golden Gate National Recreation Area and the views of the Golden Gate Bridge only enhance this beautiful beach setting.

Just north of the main parking lot is Battery Chamberlin, a massive and historic military gun installation that was built in 1904. Although the four guns were removed in 1948, the National Park Service got a similar one in 1977 and mounted it for all to see. It is operated for the public once a month, typically on the first full weekend of the month.

Be aware as you explore the north end of Baker Beach because North Baker Beach is a clothing-optional area. All of Baker Beach is an unsafe swimming area because of cold water and frequent rip currents in the surf.

Baker is a great beach. The best spots are near the parking lots and to the south. If you walk up towards the Golden Gate Bridge there will probably be people without their bathing suits. Battery Chamberlin is huge and worth going to see.
