Davenport Pier Beach

Davenport Pier Beach is the northern of two beaches right in the tiny town of Davenport, CA. This beach is across from the huge concrete and cement plant that’s visible at the north end of town.

Davenport Pier, a frequently photographed landmark, is at the beach below the bluff, but it is not easy to get to. Eager photographers make their way down to capture sunset pictures of the pier foundation arches which stretch out into the surf. The pier deck surface has been gone for years, but that makes this spot even more mysterious and photogenic. Photos can also be taken from the bluff which is much safer. This blufftop area is signed as “Davenport Bluffs” and has trails with many good viewpoints.

A steep dangerous route down to the beach is directly above a graffiti-covered concrete structure at the base of the bluff. Be super careful if you decide to venture down to the beach. Due to the exposure, it’s not advised, especially if the fixed rope is missing or not in good shape. Davenport Pier Beach is considered one of the hardest beaches in California to get to.

At low tide, it is possible to get to Davenport Pier Beach from the bluff directly across from town (south of the pier). Look for the trail on the north side of the dirt parking lot across from town that drops down into a gap in the bluff. Carefully climbing over the rocks when the tide is out will get you to the pier. This is not an official access point, so use extreme caution. At higher tides, there is a blowhole on this route.
