About Fanshell Beach in Pebble Beach, California

Fanshell Beach is one of the beaches along the famous 17 Mile Drive inside the private gates of Pebble Beach, California. A small fee is charged to the general public if they want to take this drive and access any of the beaches.

Fanshell is a north-facing beach (rare in California) that is mostly a rocky shoreline with some small pockets of sand. Above the beach on the west end is the Fanshell Overlook with a parking lot. This is one of the highlighted scenic spots on the map you’ll get when you enter Pebble Beach.

It’s fun to walk around on the rocks and the sandy spots, but watch for large waves that can sneak in on you. At low tide you’ll spot tidepools in between the rocks here.

Fanshell Beach is popular with harbor seals and is closed to humans all of April and May. During that time you can still and take photos from the overlook or the road.

For parking, there are several pull-out parking areas along the shoulder of 17 Mile Drive right behind Fanshell Beach.

Carmel, Pebble Beach, and Monterey are lovely! The homes in Carmel were so lovely and the people were very friendly The shopping district is great and the people were friendly and helpful. Even though it’s been 20 years since we were in Carmel and Monterey, our trip there is still vivid in my mind. I bought a painting of the Lone Cypress overlooking the ocean. It was done by a local artist. It is truly a wonderful piece of art and every time I look at it, it brings back such wonderful memories of a magical place.
