About Flat Rock Beach at Torrey Pines in La Jolla, California

Flat Rock Beach at Torrey Pines State Beach requires a long walk to get to, but it’s worth the effort. This is a sandy beach below steep bluffs in the middle of the state park shoreline.

To reach the beach at Flat Rock you can hike down trails from the parking lot high up on the hill next to the visitor center. Get a trail map from the visitor center or the park website and make a loop hike using Beach Trail and Broken Hill Trail.

After you get to the beach you’ll find a huge sandstone fin sticking out toward the ocean and at the base there is a large flat rock that can be climbed onto when the tide is out. At low tides the beach will be wider so you can explore south and look for sea caves. You can also get to Flat Rock by walking north from Black’s Beach or south from Torrey Pines South Beach but both routes might be all wet at high tide.

I found this beach by browsing this website for a beach hike near San Diego. It’s a great place to hike around on the bluff and the beach is fabulous. We could get onto the rock but it was a bit wild with the waves coming in and out. Super fun to be there and feel the ocean surging. I recommend hiking to this beach. It’s not a tough hike and the reward is super.
