Southern California has a wide selection of amazing beaches to choose from when traveling (just take a look at what Laguna Beach has to offer). But when looking for a luxury resort that is on or near the beach, the options are surprisingly limited. We did the research and below are the best beach resorts in Southern California.

Terranea Resort, Palos Verdes

Situated on a peninsula, Terranea Resort is almost completely surrounded by ocean. Trails and scenic overlooks abound on the resort grounds. Eight on-site restaurants offer a variety of dining options. A 9-hole golf course and a relaxing spa provide a little something for everyone. For more information, see our Terranea Resort review. Nearby beach: Terranea Cove Beach

Hotel Del Coronado, San Diego

Rich in history and mystery (there’s even rumored to be a resident ghost), this beachfront resort was once the largest in the world. It’s gone through several major upgrades and retrofits since being built in 1888, but much of its old charm is still there. The Del offers a wide range of restaurants, pools, a spa, and a kids program among other things. Nearby beach: Coronado Beach

Loews Coronado Bay Resort, San Diego

Situated almost as far south as one can go in California, this resort is an ideal spot to escape the busy city while enjoying beautiful beachside views. There are three heated pools, a spa, a tennis court and a fitness center that offers classes like yoga and kick-boxing. Guests can also just relax on the beach which is only steps from the hotel. Nearby beaches: Crown Cove & Silver Strand State Beach

The Lodge at Torrey Pines, San Diego

Fireplaces and rustic touches fill this Craftsman style resort. Next door is Torrey Pines State Reserve with beautiful trails along the coast. An 18-hole golf course is also adjacent to the resort. A farm-to-table restaurant and a relaxing spa complete this picturesque getaway spot. Nearby beaches: Flat Rock Beach at Torrey Pines, Black’s Beach

Montage, Laguna Beach

Set on a bluff overlooking the ocean on the south side of Laguna Beach, this luxury resort offers expansive views combined with a cozy atmosphere. The lobby is airy and spacious with an attached bar and live piano music most evenings. There are pools, a spa, and beach trails perfect for a morning stroll. See our Montage resort review for more info. Nearby beaches: Treasure Island Beach, Middle Man Cove, Goff Cove Beach & Christmas Cove Beach

Surf & Sand Resort, Laguna Beach

This oceanfront resort occupies 500 feet of pristine beach. All 167 rooms and 13 suites have unobstructed views of the ocean. The restaurant and bar (Splashes) and the pool are just steps away from the beach, making it easy to go back and forth between the two as much as you like. On weekends, enjoy appetizers, cocktails and live music on the patio lounge while watching the sunset or stars coming out. Nearby beaches: Bluebird Beach, Agate Street Beach, Pearl Street Beach, Mountain Road Beach

L’Auberge, Del Mar

Located in the picturesque seaside town of Del Mar, L’Auberge Resort has everything for a luxurious getaway. Charming guest rooms offer a California casual vibe, while the beach is just a stroll down the footpath away. A year-round heated pool, nearby tennis courts, golf course, and Torrey Pines State Reserve are just a few of this resort’s many amenities. Nearby beach: Del Mar City Beach

Balboa Bay Resort, Newport Beach

An Olympic-sized pool, view of the marina, and its own private beach are just a few of the perks at this resort. Every guest room includes a private balcony and other luxurious touches. Kayaks, Duffy boats, and paddleboards are available for rent so guests can cruise around the harbor. Nearby beaches: Newport Pier Beach and Balboa Pier Beach

The Ritz-Carlton, Laguna Niguel

Its bluff-top location provides guests with an all-encompassing view of the Pacific. Time your visit during whale migration and you might even see some passing by. The resort also offers whale watching excursions to guests, along with other eco-adventures perfect for families. Beautiful grounds with pools, walking paths, and fire pits surround this luxurious resort. Nearby beaches: Salt Creek Beach & Dana Strand Beach

Hotel Casa del Mar, Los Angeles

Situated directly on the beach in Santa Monica, this resort is all about location. Guests can enjoy panoramic views of the ocean, including the famous Santa Monica Pier. The beach boardwalk is just outside, stretching for miles north and south. An onsite seafood restaurant features fresh and local fare, and the hotel lobby often has live music on the weekends. Nearby beach: Santa Monica State Beach

Shutters on the Beach, Santa Monica

Next door to Hotel Casa del Mar sits Shutters on the Beach, a sister hotel. Shutters offers a beach house type feel with hotel amenities such as a pool, spa, and onsite restaurants. Just outside is the Santa Monica beach where visitors can rent a bike and explore the miles of bike paths that stretch up and down the coast. Nearby beach: Santa Monica State Beach

The Resort at Pelican Hill, Newport Beach

An enormous circular pool, a world class golf course, and a kids program are just a few of the unique amenities at this beachside resort. The nearby beach provides the perfect backdrop for outdoor activities such as surf lessons, kayak tours, and Crystal Cove bike tours, all arranged by resort staff. Nearby beach: Crystal Cove State Park

Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa

An ideal spot for beach-loving families or couples, this resort offers multiple pools, water slides, a spa, and memorable sunsets.
