Newport Municipal Beach

Newport Municipal Beach is located on both sides of the Newport Beach Pier. The beaches are continuous along the shore here and you can walk on the sand for miles in either direction. Balboa Pier Beach is just to the south and the city border with Huntington Beach is just a couple of miles to the north.

The picturesque wooden fishing pier has wonderful views up and down the shoreline (it’s open 5am to midnight). Benches are provided if you want to take a break and just take in the scene. There used to be a restaurant at the end of the pier but it has since closed. You can still walk around the outside of the building for 360 degree views. Fortunately, there are lots of other restaurants and bars nearby.

Surfers enjoy the break here and the wide sandy beach is attractive for just about any beach activity. Beach volleyball is one of the most popular.

The paved Newport-Balboa Bike Trail (aka Ocean Front Walk) runs behind the beach for miles and biking is one of the best ways to see the Balboa Peninsula.

To get to Newport’s Municipal Beach, turn off Balboa Boulevard at 21st Place to enter the parking lot next to the pier. Despite the large size and fees for parking, this lot fills up on busy days.

At the back of the beach you’ll find the Dory Fleet Fish Market which was founded in 1891. They still sell the fresh catch that is hauled in by dory boat fishermen who venture out after midnight in search of seasonal seafood including crab, lobster, mussels, prawns and nearshore fish. Head there before sunrise, bring cash, and get in line to buy the freshest seafood around. It’s a real experience.
