About Del Mar City Beach in Del Mar, California

The Main Beach of Del Mar City Beach starts at Powerhouse Park and goes north all the way to the lagoon entrance at the San Dieguito River. This long strand is a popular one as it’s the main beach in Del Mar.

On sunny days Del Mar Beach could be crowded so parking spaces in the lots and on side streets can be hard to find. A large paid parking lot on Coast Boulevard is your best bet for parking. Get an early start to enjoy this beach for the entire day and then watch the sunset.

Powerhouse Park near the main parking lot is a perfect place to make your base for a day trip to Del Mar Beach. This grass park has picnic tables and benches overlooking the beach and there are restaurants, shops, and other services nearby.

The two-story lifeguard building has a full view over the beach just north of the park and has public restrooms. This is a safe place to hang-out on the beach if you have children playing near the water.

Jake’s Del Mar and Poseidon Restaurant are on the beach between Powerhouse Park and the lifeguard bldg. The Del Mar Snack Shack is behind Poseidon if you want something quicker and cheaper to eat. They have ice cream, burgers, salads, and drinks.

If you walk south from Powerhouse Park you will be on South Beach tucked below steep colorful eroding bluffs. Note that at high tide the beaches of Del Mar can be narrow.

At the far north end of Del Mar Beach next to a lagoon you’ll find Del Mar North Beach. This is the city’s “Dog Beach” as dogs can be spotted there at almost any time of day.
