About Miramar Beach in Montecito, California

Miramar Beach is a public beach in front of a gated community called Miramar Beach in Montecito. This is a great south-facing cove with a narrow sandy beach that most Santa Barbara visitors don’t know about. With rising sea levels and storms, the sand on Miramar Beach can be depleted at times, but this is a beautiful place to walk when the tide is out.

Fancy beach homes and a new beachfront luxury resort occupy the land behind the beach. An historic resort, the Miramar Hotel Resort, was torn down a few years ago (it shut down in 2000) and the valuable property sat vacant for several years. The replacement resort, the Rosewood Miramar Beach Hotel, opened in February 2019 and it is truly a work of art. A noisy railroad track cuts through the resort property and passes behind the homes.

To get to Miramar Beach, head south on San Ysidro Lane from Montecito or take exit 93 from Highway 101 and head toward the water. San Ysidro turns into Eucalyptus Lane after you cross Highway 101. At the end of the road there is a small parking lot. When the lot is full you can park along streets on the other side of the railroad tracks. The Eucalyptus Lane Beach Access pathway is straight ahead from the parking lot and Miramar Beach is to the left. You can continue walking east on this beach in front of stunning homes on Fernald Point. You might see surfers walking west on the Hammonds Meadow Trail (which starts at the parking lot) to reach a surfing area known as Hammonds Beach. If you walk west on the beach at low tide there are tide pools to explore, but if the tide is up take the trail with the surfers.
