About Treasure Island in San Francisco, California

Treasure Island is a man-made island adjacent to Yerba Buena Island in the middle of San Francisco Bay. It was built in the 1930s for an expo in 1939 that celebrated the completion of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (the Bay Bridge route crosses Yerba Buena Island). During WWII the island was converted to military use and it remained that way until the late 1990s.

Over the last few years design and construction has begun on converting it to residential use. The master plan includes up to 8000 housing units for all income levels plus parks and open spaces. Hotels, restaurants, and other services will be provided to support the residents. It’s already teeming with life as businesses are moving in to welcome the daily visitors who come to walk, bike, and kayak around the island. New residents are expected to move in in the 2020’s, but the island restoration isn’t expected to be completed until around 2032.

Treasure Island doesn’t have any sandy beaches as it is surrounded by a protective rock barrier, but a small sandy beach on Clipper Cove can be found nearby on Yerba Buena Island. Treasure Island, which is nearly a square mile in size, is easily accessible by an exit off the Bay Bridge onto Yerba Buena Island.
