About Wheeler Beach in Whitethorn, California
Wheeler Beach is a hike-in only beach located near Wheeler Camp in Sinkyone Wilderness State Park along the North Mendocino Coast. The beach is in a small cove where Jackass Creek flows down and pools on the dark-colored sand. At the beach visitors are exposed to the weather and waves rolling in from the west, but camp is inland enough to have some protection. Access to Wheeler Beach is via the Lost Coast Trail backpacking trail from the north (Bear Harbor Beach) or south end (Usal Beach). Hiking The Lost Coast Trail requires a wilderness permit which you can get at Usal Campground or at Needle Rock Visitor Center along the Bear Harbor Road.
