About Black Jack Campground on Catalina Island in Avalon, California

Black Jack is a remote campground in the central mountains of Santa Catalina Island. It’s popular with hikers and backpackers who are crossing the island on the Trans-Catalina Trail.

This campground is made up of 10 separate tent camp sites on the highest ridge on the island. The camp is over 1500 feet above the ocean which is not visible from the camp sites. For a superb view hike up to the camp’s namesake peak, Black Jack Mountain which is close and has clear views from 2000 feet elevation. The summit of the island, Mount Orizaba (2225′) is visible and just one mile away from camp, but it’s gated off to protect a military radar facility. The campground has running water, showers, chemical type toilets, picnic tables, barbecues, and fire pits. Reservations are require and can be booked online or over the phone.
