Spyglass Inn Resort on the Central Coast in California’s favorite beach city, Pismo Beach, offers its own stairway to the stars. No, these aren’t celebrities, the stars cling to rocks, and are colorfully-shaped sea creatures in brilliant orange and red. This area of Pismo Beach is called Shell Beach and it is known for tidepools.

The beach down a set of stairs from the hotel offers sandy coves and some rocky outcroppings where you can watch the tiny sand crabs that hide, or starfish. An on-site restaurant offers indoor and outdoor dining with ocean views where you can gaze at the sea on sunny days, or sit inside as the sun goes down and cuddle as you watch the orange-yellow sun fade from view while dining on cocktails and appetizers.

We call Spyglass Inn a resort, though its creature comforts and affordable room rates place it in the category of a beach hotel. But the resort aspect comes into play when you wander from your room to the restaurants, or veer just a bit further down the steps to the beach.

The hotel is one of several options along this exclusive stretch of land lined with hotels and resorts that are all ocean facing, and all worth a stay. We like the suites next door at Dolphin Bay Resort, but their price is often double the cost of a hotel room. That property rents its time share units when available and for the fee, you’re getting a kitchen living room and bedroom. But for those who don’t need to live in Pismo Beach…just enjoy a night or two of visiting, Spyglass Inn has the right space and place to fulfill your requirements for romance, family travel or even business on the coast.
