About Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge in Loleta, California

Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge is on the Humboldt Bay Estuary south of Eureka. This refuge protects bird and other wildlife habitats and allows public access for recreation. There is hiking trail called the Shorebird Loop Trail that starts from the visitor center for bird-watching and wildlife observation. There is a non-motorized boat launch just off Hookton Road for boating and kayaking in the estuary as well. Another hiking trail called the Hookton Slough Trail begins at the Hookon parking lot. A designated waterfowl hunting area is available for use during hunting season. Unfortunately, there is no beach in the main part of the Humboldt Bay NWR, but the refuge also manages Ma-le’l Dunes and Lanphere Dunes on the North Spit near Arcata and these units have beach access.
