About Ano Nuevo Elephant Seal Tours in Sacramento, California
The only way visitors can see the elephant seals at Ano Nuevo State Park in California is to take a tour. The state park has knowledgeable docents that lead tours to the point overlooking the elephant beach habitat in the natural preserve. They are available mid-day daily (rain or shine) from Dec 15th to March 31st except for Christmas and the last weekend in January. The walks are about four miles round trip and usually take longer than 2 hours. The fee is nominal. Make reservations ahead of your trip if possible as the tour sizes are limited and they fill up. See the state park website for planning logistics and reservations. One of the highlights of this trek out to the point is the view of Ano Nuevo Island which is closed to the public. Bring binoculars to look out at the island which has seals, sea lions, and many seabirds. Several abandoned buildings, including a classic looking house, still stand on the island and make good photography subjects.
