Hans Jenny Pygmy Forest Reserve in Caspar, California
The Hans Jenny Pygmy Forest Reserve is a protected area that is part of the Natural Reserve System of the University of California. It’s located inland about two miles from Jug Handle State Beach in Caspar, California. The pygmy trees in this forest are stunted for several reasons including the soil depths and soil types.
To get to the pygmy forest, hike the Ecological Staircase Trail from the parking lot for Jug Handle State Natural Reserve. This trail ascends five different layers of rock that were created by wave action over hundreds of thousands of years. Each terrace is said to be 100,000 years different in age. Several other forest groves of different species including redwoods can be found along the hiking trail leading to the pygmy forest.
